The College is established as a senior college and named after Medgar Evers.
The name, Medgar Evers College, was recommended by the Community Council and formally approved by the Board of Higher Education of the City University of New York on September 28, 1970. Medgar Evers College was established in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn and is the only CUNY institution founded as a result of community advocacy.
The official ceremonial opening was held on September 9, 1970.
Although the College had a small summer school and a public program on July 2 commemorating Medgar Evers’ birthday, the official ceremonial opening was held on September 9.
